There are seven coronaviruses that can cause human disease, with the three most severe of those diseases being SARS, MERS, and COVID-19.

The 2020 COVID-19 epidemic is notable because it’s a new virus in humans, spreading much faster and wider globally than SARS or MERS did.

COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

It’s alarming because it has a much higher fatality rate than the flu and has spread more widely than previous coronaviruses.

The incubation period (the period between exposure to an infection and the appearance of the first symptoms) is also quite long.

Coronavirus Precaution

As of now, a vaccine has not been formulated for the novel coronavirus COVID-19. In light of this fact, prevention appears to be the best cure available so far.

Here are the measures you need to take to keep the virus at bay

1. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Maintain at least 3-4 feet distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.

2. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

3. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

4. Go to the hospital if you feel you are infected – While you won’t know if you have a bad cold, seasonal flu, or COVID-19, hospitals may be able to diagnose you (test availability notwithstanding) and at least provide appropriate medical care.

Early care is critical for avoiding worst-case-outcomes such as lung damage or death since a mild cough and fever early in the course of COVID-19 can quickly transition to pneumonia.

5. Simple lifestyle change can also help to prevent infection –  Take adequate sleep, since lack of sleep increases susceptibility to catching the flu and common cold] and usually messes with your immune system.

6. Avoid ultra-processed food High amounts of processed sugar and fat can interfere with proper immune function.

Coronavirus Myths

1. Wearing a mask is important 

These days wherever you roam, you will find a number of people wearing a mask but it is not required for normal people. It is necessary for people who are infected.

U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams appealed to people via Twitter over the weekend “Seriously people — STOP BUYING MASKS!”.

“They are NOT effective in preventing the general public from catching coronavirus, but if healthcare providers can’t get them to care for sick patients, it puts them and our communities at risk!”

2. Eating chicken and meat can cause coronavirus

Another misconception doing the rounds is that one should completely prohibit the usage of meat, as this virus spreads from animals to people.

What people need to understand is that nothing has been established so far and it is completely safe to eat non-vegetarian food in India.

The only thing that you need to take care of is whether the meat has been hygienically cooked and not raw, as this is the best way to prevent transmission of any disease through animal meat.

FSSAI chief GSG Ayyangar said on Thursday 5th March that there is no scientific evidence to show that coronavirus spreads through eating chicken, mutton and seafood, and asserted that the virus would not survive in higher temperature.

“It is basically an animal virus. Let us leave it to scientists to figure out how it has been transmitted…however, ours is a tropical country and once the temperature crosses 35-36 degrees celsius, no virus will survive.
